Therapeutic Massage
Targeted, goal-driven massage built around a specific problem — a stiff neck, a bad shoulder, a low back that keeps flaring — rather than a set routine.

About Service
Therapeutic massage is the general term for massage with a job to do. Instead of a set sequence applied to everyone, the hour is built around one problem: the shoulder that will not rotate, the neck that locks up by Thursday, the low back that flares whenever you sit too long. The techniques are chosen to match.
What Makes It Therapeutic
The difference is intent and structure. A therapeutic session begins with a specific complaint, includes some assessment of how you move and where you are tender, and returns to that complaint at the next visit to see whether anything changed. Deep tissue work, trigger point work, stretching, and lighter techniques may all show up in the same hour, depending on what the tissue needs.
What It Is Used For
Common goals include restoring range of motion after an injury or a period of guarding, reducing tension headaches that start in the neck and shoulders, calming recurring low back tightness, easing repetitive strain from work or training, and staying ahead of flare-ups in an area with a history.
How It Differs From a Relaxation Massage
Both have a place. A relaxation session is about downshifting the nervous system and feeling good afterward. A therapeutic session is about changing something specific, which sometimes means spending most of the hour on one region and skipping the areas that feel fine. Both happen inside the same 60-minute appointment, so it comes down to what you ask for at the start.
How It Works Alongside Chiropractic Care
When soft tissue is doing the work a joint should be doing, it stays tight and keeps pulling things back out of position. Addressing both tends to be more durable than addressing either alone. If you are already under care with Dr. Heaps, the massage work can be aimed at the same areas the exam flagged.
Who Provides Therapeutic Massage
Therapeutic sessions at Heaps of Relief are provided by Jaylene, a licensed massage therapist whose training spans deep tissue, therapeutic, and relaxation massage, cupping, CBD massage, and Rapid Tension Release, with continuing education in prenatal massage, kinesiology, and orthopedic pediatric massage.
Booking and What a Session Involves
There is one massage appointment to book: a 60-minute session with Jaylene. Therapeutic work is one of the ways she can use that hour, so you do not pick a technique when you book. Expect questions first: what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you need to be able to do. Then a short look at how the area moves, the hands-on work itself, and a re-check at the end. You will leave knowing what changed and what to watch for before the next visit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from deep tissue massage?
Deep tissue describes the pressure and the depth of the work. Therapeutic describes the purpose. A therapeutic session often includes deep tissue work, but it may also include lighter techniques if that is what the problem calls for.
Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to book?
No. Book the 60-minute massage session and describe the problem when you arrive. If something comes up during the session that should be looked at more closely, we will say so.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on how long the problem has been there and what is driving it. Jaylene will give you a realistic estimate after the first visit rather than committing you to a package up front.
Will the whole body be worked on?
Usually not. Time goes where the problem is, plus the areas connected to it. If you would rather have full-body work, say so at the start and the hour is used that way instead.
Can therapeutic massage help with headaches?
It can help when the headaches are driven by neck and shoulder tension, which is common. Headaches that are new, severe, or changing in pattern should be evaluated first.
